Geschichte
The story
The brief
Hafenlicht was moving from a warehouse annex into a former customs hall. The collection is enormous and mostly small: ledgers, tin labels, rope samples, letters. The museum asked for graphics that would make small things feel important without shouting over them.
The grid
We measured the customs hall and drew the wall grid first: twelve columns, each the width of a standard ledger page. Every label, date and caption snaps to it. Text is Switzer at three sizes only; the room numbers are the single use of Fraktur, cut in vinyl at 900 millimetres.
The result
The museum reports that average time in front of a label rose from nine seconds to forty. The catalogue, the tickets and the harbour trail signs all use the same twelve columns, so the building and the printed matter read as one document.

Visitors read our walls now instead of walking past them.
